Inclusive Care: Experiences of LGBTQ+ children and young people in care
It was produced by Social Finance, LGBTQ+ Youth in Care, and nine LGBTQ+ care experienced adults, and sets out practical recommendations that the care system can take forwards to improve data, relationships and training.
Our ambition is for an inclusive care system, where all LGBTQ+ children and young people receive the support they need in line with the rights of every child.
We recommend:
- Data about gender identity and the sexual orientation of young people in care should be collected in a trauma informed and person-centred way
- There is a need for new approaches to enable and nurture positive relationships between children and young people and those who care for them
- Training is necessary to equip those who work with care experienced people with the awareness and tools they need to support the specific needs of LGBTQ+ children and young people
This report is the start, and we are keen to hear from anyone who is interested in working with us to develop these ideas further, generate new ones, and ultimately deliver necessary change – please get in touch by emailing inclusivecare@socialfinance.org.uk.
Working together, inclusive care can be the experience of every child.
