Wellcome Global Learning Network

A pioneering initiative to unlock the potential of longitudinal qualitative data for mental health research – supported by Social Finance.

Millions of people across the world are living with mental health problems, and data about their experiences gathered over time can provide valuable insights to support early intervention. Improved ways of managing and analysing longitudinal qualitative data sets could help achieve these insights.

To create a world where no one is held back by mental health problems, Wellcome is driving transformation in early intervention for anxiety, depression and psychosis.

Prof Miranda Wolpert MBE, Director of Mental Health, Wellcome

The Wellcome Global Learning Network will bring together a diverse multidisciplinary group from across the world to address shared challenges in mental health research and to realise the potential of longitudinal qualitative data.

Researchers, clinical practitioners, data holders, governance & policy specialists, technical experts – as well as those with lived experience of depression, anxiety or psychosis – will share knowledge and develop solutions.

Social Finance is Wellcome’s learning partner for this pioneering initiative. We will support the Learning Network to:

Conduct pilot studies

creating practical tools and approaches to unlock the value of longitudinal qualitative data for mental health research

Foster peer learning & collaboration

developing a culture of learning, trust, and innovation among a diverse group of multidisciplinary team members

Shape future priorities

generating actionable recommendations on how longitudinal qualitative data can advance mental health research in anxiety, depression, and psychosis.

The Wellcome Global Network will focus on three areas – these were shaped through a collaborative process with Wellcome and the Learning Network’s Advisory Group.

Three Focus Areas:

Developing practical solutions for testing and improving data integrity in qualitative longitudinal research such as handling missing data, integrating multimodal data types and applying data ethics best practice.

Developing standardised research methods for analysing qualitative longitudinal mental health data in anxiety, depression and psychosis across diverse cultural and geographic contexts.

Applying techniques such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) to improve the analysis of qualitative longitudinal data in anxiety, depression and psychosis.

We are looking for three Focus Areas Leads with relevant expertise to oversee project design in each area.

Each focus area has been allocated £40,000 in funding – this will be used to support the Learning Network membership’s involvement in developing and delivering tangible outputs.

The benefits of joining the Learning Network either as a Focus Area Lead or as a member

Work alongside a diverse group of professionals and stakeholders to address shared challenges in mental health research.
